North American Snowy Owls

Made famous through J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series of fantasy novels, one particular feathered character named Hedwig is a Snowy Owl that has brought not only Snowy Owls but all of Owlkind into the forefront of public consciousness. Following the immense popularity of Rowling's books, the series was made into several full-length feature films. Interestingly enough, one of the owl actors portraying Hedwig happened to be the very first cast member to be chosen!

Like the rest of Owlkind, Snowy Owls are undoubtedly beautiful and majestic creatures. The majority of Owlkind are nocturnal and are often very difficult to study and photograph in the wild. Snowy Owls distinguish themselves by being one of the few kinds of diurnal owls. The diurnality of Snowy Owls is taken to the extreme as they will continously hunt during the extended daylight hours of Arctic summers. This can make observing Snowy Owls a bit easier if you can manage a summer vacation north of the Arctic Circle.

Thanks to the work of avid birdwatchers, scientists, and volunteers, observational data has been catalogued for well over a century. One broad dataset maintained by eBird.org currently contains 211,619 lines of observations and includes historical data from 6 January 1862 to 31 October 2021, as well as habitat range spatial data. Though this dataset is large, it has some limitations, such as the potential for multiple observational data of the same bird in a similar location. It is also limited to areas where people make observations. For example, there are no data points within the interior glacial fields of Greenland. Furthermore, the data hardly indicates a significant presence of Snowy Owls in prime Snowy Owl real estate locations such as Siberia. This is likely due to a lack of reporting rather than a lack of Snowy Owls in the region.

Datasets from studies employing GPS tracking of specific individual birds can provide information on where, when, and the routes Snowy Owls travel, as well as how long they stay in a particular area. One such study used here is maintained at Movebank.org in coordination with the Max Planck Institute of Animal Behavior (Germany), the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences (USA), and the University of Konstanz (Germany). This type of data is particularly useful because, despite the lack of human observational data, the GPS data shows that Snowy Owls do indeed traverse Greenland's interior with regularity. Additionally, I used the March 2014 data set for Sea Ice Extent to illustrate that Snowy Owls weren't just "hanging out over the water" (based on GPS tracking data) but were probably on an ice floe doing whatever Snowy Owls do on ice floes—which is probably eating—since they go about making Snowy Owlets in the summer almost as far north as possible. The folks at Project Snow Storm have an ongoing effort to research and build the body of knowledge on Snowy Owls using GPS technology and various data visualisation techniques. Admittedly, using the two data sets in the same heat map comprises a bit of mixing "apples and oranges" in terms of the data type. However, the chart accurately captures and emphasises that Snowy Owls are rarely ever found loitering within the Boreal Forests. Since the eyes of Snowy Owls are adapted to hunting in open spaces with unobstructed visibility—be it the tundra, plains, or ice—their presence in forested areas is transitory as they pass from one open hunting area to another. Of note, the GPS data sets mentioned earlier might be interpreted to imply that Snowy Owls are migratory birds. This is not the case. Snowy Owls do not migrate in the traditional sense but only travel far if food becomes scarce.

All of the aforementioned datasets can be further analysed through the use of data visualisation software. Here, I make use of a freely available and open-source Geospatial Information System (GIS) software called QGIS to analyse and integrate various data, as well as create maps and other data visualisation (with the exception of the heatmap, which was a quick build in ArcGIS Pro). I also make use of MapBox.com's web-based mapping service to build the interactive map seen at the top of the page.

The static maps below make it readily apparent that Snowy Owls occupy a vast range that varies with season and are immensely capable of migrating over great distances with multiple sightings in places such as Burmuda and Florida. In fact, in 2011 a Snowy Owl flew all the way to Hawaii!
